Rather than organic composts or soils, orchid plants require a suitable blend of aerating materials as well as water retaining materials. Ratio of both the material depends upon the kind of orchid that is grown. Undue moisture, usually settles around the pockets of the orchid potting mix, owing to this there is quick decomposition of the compost. The arising of this situation results in rotting of the roots of orchids and also, the leaves of the plant turns yellow. An amateur orchid grower will conceive that owing to less watering the plant has refuted to this condition. Perhaps, then the grower will over water the plant and thereby, further harm the roots and ultimately destroy the plant.

Organic Orchid Potting Mix:

The orchids usually grow, if a blend of organic as well as inorganic fibers is used in combination. These Orchid potting Mix are easily available in any local nursery, they are very simple to use and not so expensive. Alternatively, an orchid grower can also create his own mix involving a whole range of materials. Every mix accompanies with itself a whole lot of benefits that can be virtually experimented in order to gain the experience. Majority of the materials that are employed for Orchid Potting Mix is fine, coarse ranks and medium. Below mentioned are the organic alternatives of the Orchid potting mix:

1. Fir Bark: These are very easy to obtain, cheap, comparatively slow with respect to decomposition. However, finds difficulty in retaining the water at the outset.

2. Coconut Husks: These are amid the first kind of fibers ever employed for the orchids. They are economical, accommodates water reasonably well and lightweight. However, they get decayed quiet rapidly as compared to fir bark.

3. Redwood Bark: They retain water in a better manner than the Fir bark as well they decay at a slow pace.

4. Tree Fern Fiber: They are perfect Orchid Potting Mix owing to their ability to do proper drainage. They are slow in decomposing but are very rarely available.

Inorganic Orchid Potting Mix:

Below mentioned are the alternatives with respect to inorganic materials:

1. Lava Rock: They have a very good drainage capability and do not crumple. However, they are heavier potting mix.

2. Charcoal: The Potting mix made up of Charcoal are slow in decaying. They assimilate the toxic matters.

3. Vermiculite: They are good in retaining water, which results in enhanced level of aeration to the orchid plant.

4. Pearlite: This mix assimilates water, has high resistance to decay, is light and is used together with supplementary inorganic material. If this Orchid Potting mix is used solely, then it will result in admitting excessive water.

With the help of the above ingredients, an orchid grower can make customized orchid potting mix for a specific orchid.

If you would like to learn more about Growing Orchid and receive a FREE Newsletter on the subject visit the authors site http://www.growingorchidhelp.com

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Jason_Hobbs

Different Types of Orchid Planters

By Jason Hobbs

The plants of orchids are quite unique and hence, they need unique types of orchid planters. There are loads of multicolored planters for orchids in the market that suit best with the respective blooms of the various orchid plants. An individual is hoarded by loads of varieties of distinctive and beautiful planters for orchids. The nurturing process of the orchids is quite easy and consigning them in unique orchid planters will boost their attractiveness. Several people live under the faulty assumption that the orchid garden is not similar to a conventional garden, but the fact is that orchids are nurtured on certain trees or planters. Orchids have their innate locales in the tropical regions of Central America and Asia. Taiwan is considered as the chief exporter of the both the planters as well as the plants of orchids. The plants of orchids are bound to be extremely stunning, if they are nurtured in the orchid planters. The orchids are also able to flourish constantly and beautifully, if they are suitably nurtured in suitable planters in an orchid nursery.

Types and Proficiency:

An individual will be delighted and very gifted to find an orchid nursery that is fully equipped with just planters of orchid. A majority of planters may be merged with certain thin stripped containers for a genuine appearance. The planters can be of leaf shape, circular, and square shapes. The pot of orchids can be easily plunged into these genuine orchid planters or else, the orchid plants can also be dipped in them straight away. The baskets that are creased with moss and sheet inside the planters possess excellent finishing. The distinctive method of creating the planters that best suits with the charismatic look of the orchids is the process of creating planters with coconuts. Basically, the orchids are tropical plant species and the plants of coconut are also tropical in nature, which ultimately makes the orchids feel that they are somewhat in their natural habitat. The hangers are also a better compliment for the orchid planters and orchid plants, as the tubers present in them are capable to fix themselves similarly as of other plants. Hence, it is quite obvious that organizing and managing the planters for orchids is not that difficult.

Shady Planters:

The exotic orchids are most preferred to place in a stunning metallic green planter that would provide a supplemented sense of modishness and classiness. The dimension of this gorgeous metallic green planter is 4 ¾"H x 4"D with a general dimension of around 16"H. Further, the orchid planters that are also quite outstanding and which represents the shape of the lotus is known as the black ceramic planters. The dimension of the black ceramic planter is 5"H x 4.5"D with a general measurement of 14"H.

If you would like to learn more about Growing Orchid and receive a FREE Newsletter on the subject visit the authors site http://www.growingorchidhelp.com

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Jason_Hobbs

Orchid Care Repotting

What to do when your orchid is done blooming. However, you can buy orchids that can thrive indoors or in a greenhouse. You do need to be familiar with the characteristics and conditions that orchids need to thrive in to result in a healthy indoor living condition. Here are some tips to care for the wholesale orchids you have purchased.

Contrary to typical plants, orchids do not grow in soil. In fact, planting an orchid in soil will kill the plant. In the wild, orchids grow on the bark of trees. Orchids should be grown in a similar way. Pots should be filled with loosely packed material such as bark or stones. Water is capable of draining quickly and also exposes the orchid roots to air. If wholesale orchids are left in standing water, they will eventually die.

Wholesale orchids also need to have the temperature variations of the plants that are grown in the wild. In nature, orchids go through a range of temperatures between night and day time hours. This can be achieved indoors by creating a drop in temperature at night by a minimum of ten degrees. This will encourage flower buds to set more readily. Wholesale orchids can survive without this change in temperature, but they will not necessarily thrive without it.

Depending on the color of the leaf on the orchid, this will demonstrate whether or night the orchid is getting the proper amount of light. If it is not getting enough light, the leaves will appear dark green. If the leaves have a grassy color, then the plant is getting the right amount of light for blooming. Too much light can result in a yellowish color on the orchid leaves.

Growing orchids can be a fun rewarding experience inside your home. Use the research above to help the orchid make the transition from the outside to the indoors without putting the life of the orchid at risk. Follow the proper care instructions for an indoor orchid and you will be able to provide a colorful look inside your home.

As an author at eZ-search, Chris Miller contributes to the growing content found within the site and shares his knowledge about orchid plant care.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Chris_Milller

Orchids Photo#12

Orchids Photo

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; Most people would say, "no way". Yet, the moth orchids that I am talking about are the ones that sway nicely in the breeze and some of the newer hybrids have a nice fragrance. These moths are easy to care for, especially a beginner. These moths are found very frequently in gardens. These are the phalaenopsis orchids.

Phalaenopsis orchids are the one of the easiest orchids to care for in a home. Their blooms can last up to 3months and there are some of the most colorful hybrids. Like other orchids they require light, water, temperature, fertilizer and humidity. Seems like a lot but it really isn't

The best light is indirect light. It can be bright but not direct sunlight. If you have a west facing window sill this will do just fine. Direct sun can damage the leaves of the moth orchid.

Humidity is needed for the moth orchids. They actually grow in the wild in humid rain forests. In the warm months it would be nice to mist them every day or two. They also enjoy a bright bathroom.

Let's look at the temperatures that phals like. They are an intermediate temperature orchid. This means they like temperatures from 55 to 75 or 80 degrees. As a must, the must be a temperature gradient of 10 to 15 degrees for at least 14 days in the fall to stimulate their flower spike.

Moth orchids have no pseudopods to store water and for this reason they should not completely dry out. It is fine line to let them nearly dry out and at this point water them. You should be able to tell by seeing how light the plant is before you water it.

Another way is stick your finger tip down about an inch into the plant and it should feel almost dry. It is at this point you should water. Let the water run through the plant (in the top and out the bottom) for about 20 - 30 seconds. It is important that any orchid plant does not sit in water because it will get root rot.

Fertilize the plant twice a month with a week fertilizer solution. It is recommended to cut amount of fertilizer recommended by one half. Fertilize about every other week with a balanced fertilizer except durng the summer months of growth when you can use a high nitrogen fertilizer.

Visit our Orchid Store: http://www.orchid-store.orchids-plus-more.com

This article may be reproduced as long as the author and website - www.orchids-plus-more.com - are indentified as the source.

This site http://www.orchids-plus-more.com is devoted to these wonderful orchid plants. In the wild, more than thousands of different varieties of orchids exist with hundreds of thousands of hybrids. Wild orchid flowers also come in a gamut of different characteristics in practically every color or shade. This is why wild orchids are very much prized by people all over the world.

Orchids grow in the wild, thriving mostly in dense forests and jungles, making them such exotic members of the botanical world. Wild orchids exist practically in every planet save, of course, for Antarctica where plant life can hardly survive.

There are three different general types of orchids that grow in the wild. Terrestrial orchids such as Cymbidiums and Paphiopedilums, are those that grow on the ground, particularly in marshes. Epiphytic orchids are those that usually grow on rocks or trees, from which they can anchor themselves with their roots to absorb water and nutrients. Saprophytic orchids are those that thrive in decayed plants, these do not have green leaves and are not really much grown as ornamental plants because of their lack of beauty.

Caring for Wild Orchids

Most people think of wild orchids as very delicate plants that need complicated steps for care, but actually, orchids are very easy to care for. It is not like the bonsai plant which requires a lot of attention. Since wild orchids grow in the wild, they can pretty much fend for themselves. Of course you can expect that wild orchids would have to adjust when you bring them to your home. Here are some important steps to make it easy for a wild orchid to thrive in civilization:

The important thing about growing wild orchids is to maintain an environment that it prefers. You do not necessarily have to grow a jungle at home, you just need to make sure that the place where you put the wild orchid has the right amount of humidity, temperature, light and air. You also need to provide it with ample water and food.

1. Humidity - wild orchids need around 60% humidity. If you live in a dry area, you may either buy a humidity tray or surround the orchid with trays filled with water and rocks.

2. Temperature - wild orchids are not really picky about temperature, just do not subject it to extremes. When it is very cold you may bring the orchid somewhere warm. If it gets hot, you can just spray water to cool it.

3. Light - orchids are also not so sensitive to light, they generally can withstand direct sunlight or no light for long periods.

4. Air - Orchids do need good ventilation, however, so it is important to make sure it gets ample air, but not too much wind.

5. Water - check the place where the orchid is attached to, if it is moist, then the plant probably has enough water, if it is dry, you might need to add more.

6. Food - although wild orchids need some amount of fertilizer, it should not get too much. It is often advisable to dilute the fertilizer with lots of water to prevent fertilizer build-up.

Wild orchids are very good additions to one's garden or home. These include the Vanilla Planifola Species from which derives the commercial vanilla flavoring. The name mainly comes from the Spanish word "vainilla" which is a diminutive type of "vaina" which means "sheath". This in turn, is derived from the Latin word "vagina". These species of vanilla orchids occur worldwide in the subtropical and tropical regions ranging from the tropical Asia to tropical America, West Africa and New Guinea. These vanilla orchids were known to the Aztecs. Vanilla is also grown on a commercial scale. This type of wine like plants has the monopodial habit of climbing. These have the capability of forming long wines having length exceeding 35 meters and containing alternate leaves which are spread along the length.

Characteristics:

Vanilla Orchids are native to the neo tropical region. They are mostly found in the regions including the Central Americas, Mexico, northern part of South America and the West Indies. Besides these, vanilla orchids are also found in the South East Asian regions. Vanilla orchids are both epiphytic and terrestrial in nature. They mostly grow on the other plants or on the soil and of shoot aerial roots, which capture nutrients and water. To grow the vanilla orchid and make it to produce orchid flowers is a rewarding experience in itself. These vanilla orchid species are simple to grow in the greenhouse or garden. A redwood orchid bark or a well draining humus rich soil is just about perfect for this orchid. The temperature or humidity need not be below 40 degrees. While most people don't know the fact that there is a link between the vanilla and the orchids, actually, vanilla orchids belong to the largest and the oldest flowering plant group - the orchids. In addition, the vanilla family is only amongst all the orchids, which produce a crop that is agriculturally valuable.

More on Vanilla Orchid:

The vanilla orchids mostly grow on the edges of the tropical forests. They have fleshy, thick stems and greenish, small flowers which blossom early in the morning which are easily pollinated by bees and hummingbirds. The ovaries of the vanilla swell and then develop into fruits once they get pollinated. These ovaries are called as pods. They are similar to the thin, long runner beans. The flowers of the vanilla orchids possess a slight scent without any element of aroma or vanilla flavor. The vanilla pods develop after 4 weeks and are then dried, harvested and cured for producing the distinct flavor which millions of people know and love. A simple vanilla orchid has indirectly become an ingredient for a good taste the world over!

If you would like to learn more about Growing Orchid and receive a FREE Newsletter on the subject visit the authors site http://www.growingorchidhelp.com

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Jason_Hobbs

Orchids: A Luxurious Look That's Really Not Hard To Achieve

By Anne Clarke

The idea that orchids are not easy to grow can often be proven wrong by keeping one main thing in mind. The primary cause of orchid death is from over-watering. A good rule of thumb for growing any kinds of orchids is to run tepid water through the orchids’ pot for several seconds until you can see water flowing freely through the drain holes at the bottom. If your orchid is part of an arrangement, take out the individual pot the orchid is contained in and use this method.

There are certain general rules for maintenance and care of different types of orchids, so the first thing to do, as a garden enthusiast, is to learn the basics of orchid growing, so you can begin to learn the specifics for maintaining the orchids you choose to grow. There are many kinds of orchids to choose from.

Always water your orchids in the same manner when they become dry. This way, you will develop a system that works best for your orchid. Often it is a great idea to mist your orchid daily if it is kept indoors.

Make sure you have the right orchid supplies, including good orchid pots for the best possible results.

Depending on what type of orchid you buy, there will be certain requirements for maintaining its health and elegance. You will want to determine what kind of orchid it is (what genus) and how best to care for that particular flower. There are phalaenopsis orchids, cymbidium orchids, cattleya orchid and more to choose from.

It is a good idea to check out the different kinds of orchids before you buy, so that instead of having to work too hard to adapt your environment to the specific needs of your plant, you can choose a plant that will be more suitable to the environment that you can already provide.

Some orchids do very well outdoors and some are better indoors depending on where you live, the amount of light, water and humidity the orchid will need etc. You can find wild orchids, blue orchids, purple orchids, Hawaiian orchids, and more on the market today.

If you really want to grow an orchid that perhaps you do not have the ideal conditions for, there are different kinds of methods and merchandise such as lights etc that can assist you in creating artificial and yet ideal conditions for your orchid.

Anne Clarke writes numerous articles for websites on gardening, parenting, fashion, and home decor. These are one of the most popular of retail orchid plants. They are a true epiphyte or air plant. There pseudopods can gather and hold water very efficiently. Generally there will be a hybrid phalaenopsis and dendrobium, commonly known as Dtps.

Potting

This needs only to be done every two to three years and it should be with a porous, free draining media. This may be a combination of wood chips, small stone and and pieces of styrofoam peanuts. This will allow the draining of water and fertilizer. Dendrobiums seem to grow best when the pot is smaller than the size of the orchid plant.

Lighting

The dendrobium orchids require about 50% sun or bright light. They will do well in an east or west window as well as a shaded south window.

They also do well under 4 - 40 watt fluorescent lights directly over the plant.

Temperature

These plants need a difference in temperature between the night and day. Preferably this difference should be about 10 - 15 degrees. The night temps they like is 60-65 with days between 80 - 90.

Air circulation is needed and is especially when the temps are above 90 degrees.

Water

Like most orchids Dendrobiums need to be kept moist while actively growing. When it is mature, as are most of orchids-plus-more.com plants they should dry between watering.

Dendrobiums thrive when the humidity is about 50 - 60%. Humidity trays are usually needed while the plant is in the home.

Fertilizer

Use a balance fertilizer like Jack's Classic 20-20-20. Use weakly, weekly. That is, use a solution which is between 1/4 to 1/2 the recommended dosage.

Visit our Orchid Store: http://www.orchid-store.orchids-plus-more.com

Comments or questions: http://www.orchids-plus-more.com/orchid-contact.html

This site is devoted to these wonderful orchid plants. There are certain times of the year that most orchids bloom. You can see when these times are in my book, Mastering Orchids in the flowering table. There are three or four steps you can try to get your orchid to re-bloom.

1. One of the first things to look for is light. Without the proper lighting your orchid will not have new flowers. Light is the most important factor to help with this process. This is one of the first things to try. Remember in the winter the amount of light is lessened and this can have an effect.

2. Next is a change in temperatures. This is especially true for phalaenopsis orchids but does hold true for other genera of orchids. It is recommended that your temperatures vary about 10 - 15 degrees between day and night time. This is easier to do in the Northern climates.

It may be a simple as putting your plants outside when the weather gets cooler. This may need to be done in Southern climates.

3. After your orchid is finished blooming you should cut the spike back. You will notice little "bumps" on the spikes, these are called knuckles or more properly nodes. About 2 inches above the 3rd node from the bottom of the spike cut the rest of the spike off.

After you have done this the spike needs to be protected from disease. This is accomplished by using cinnamon powder or melted wax over the cut area. Cinnamon is should be used on any cut area.

4. If all else has failed there is one last trick to reblooming you can use. And that is to get the orchid into darkness. Yes, I said darkness. There are some experts who recommend this as a first step. I don't. This may be true especially for cattleyas but can be done for all orchid genera.

To do this the plant needs darkness for at least 12 hours a day. This can be accomplished by putting it in a dark basement or putting a lightweight dark cloth over it.

These steps will get your orchid to produce more of those great looking blooms.

Be one of the first to get my new e-book, Mastering Orchids, your guide to growing beautiful orchids. This will answer your orchid questions and you get it for half price ($9.95) PLUS a 15% coupon for an orchid purchase. Subscribe now

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Robert_Roy

Winter Orchids

Growing orchids is not hard. There are many reasons why leaves turn yellow. This is a common question that we receive. Orchids like all other plants age and during that aging process the older leaves will turn yellow and die. Remember we are saying the older leaves of the orchid plant, those toward the bottom.

Let's turn our attention to leaves that are not old and not on the bottom of the plant but newer leaves on the orchid. Some of the other reasons include:

1. Bacterial or fungal disease
2. Too much light
3. Too much water
4. Environmental

Bacterial or fungal disease on orchid leaves will show itself as irregular yellow spots on the leaf. In other words it will not involve the whole leaf but just spots on the orchid leaf. If there is a black growing edge to the yellow spotting then this is caused by a fungus.

The treatment for the bacterial infection is with Physan which can be purchased at a nursery. For the fungal infection a fungicide for plants or orchids will do fine.

Yes, yellow leaves on orchid plants can be due to too much light. In fact, in the mid day summer sun orchids can actually get burned spots on their leaves. This may be one of the more common reasons for yellowing of leaves.

Place the plant in indirect bright light for a while and it will recover just fine. The leaves will remain yellowed and will not turn back to green.

Although, not usual, too much water can will also cause the leaves to turn yellow. But in addition there will be evidence of "rot" as well. Too much watering can cause a fungal infection and this is seen with black areas within the yellow area as seen in this picture.

Stop watering for a week or two and then only once a week after. You need to treat for a fungal infection.

What sort of environmental issues cause yellowing of orchid leaves? The biggest is cold weather. Yes, when orchids are subject to cold weather their leaves can turn yellow due to the damage caused. This can affect the whole leave(s) or parts of them.

Also, certain environmental toxins can create this condition such as paint fumes or cleaning fumes. When these are being used be sure to get air circulation moving around the orchids.

As you can see there are quite a few causes of yellowing leaves. Treat the easy ones first unless you suspect a more serious problem like a fungal or bacterial infection. If you have questions consult a good nursery or your local orchid society.

Be one of the first to get my new e-book, Mastering Orchids, your guide to growing beautiful orchids. The key decision is selecting an orchid that is suitable for your area's climate and conditions. There are over 25,000 different types of orchids so you are probably best to use the wealth of information found on the internet to determine this.

Sunlight

You should place your orchid in an area which receive large amount of sunlight most of the day and is away from any sort of drafts. A window sill that is exposed to the sun all day is an excellent choice.

But what if you don't have a sunny window or live in an area with typically cloudy weather? A choice is to use fluorescent lightning. To get the best effects, the lightning should left on for at least 12 hours and maybe longer, depending on the orchids species you are growing.

How much water for your orchid?

For most orchids, you should water your plant only when the soil is dry. However, some orchids can tolerate soaked soil and in fact, can flourish in it. However, check the watering requirements for your species of orchid.

Temperature

The correct temperature for your orchid will vary according to the species that you are growing. This typically ranges from 50 degrees F to 75 degrees F. Commercially available orchids typically require the lower range of these temperatures. Remember that your orchid doesn't like the cold so be sure to move it away from the window during cold nights.

Humidity

Humidity is important for orchids. You can increase the humidity level by placing them on top of pebbles set down in a tray filled with water. Regularly spraying the orchids with distiled water from a spray bottle can also raise the humidity level.

Orchid lovers who are looking for articles on growing orchids for beginners or where to buy orchids can purchase a wide range of easy to care for orchids from Jared Mair's online orchid store. Orchids are very expensive plants to purchase, and since they come from exotic places, can be difficult to care for properly in the more extreme climate of the United States, but it can be done. To really care for your orchids, you have to take the time to learn about them, and their requirements, so that you can provide them with everything they need to grow and be beautiful. You can find a lot of information on the Internet about caring for orchids, or may want to visit your local gardening shop, florists shop, library, or bookstore for even more resources. Once you have read up on caring for orchids plants, you should be ready to try your hand at it.

One of the first things you need to do is pay special attention to the type of orchid that you have, so that you can more accurately gauge just how much water and food it needs. Many people are not successful in caring for their orchids because they mistakenly give them too much water, which in some cases, can be even worse than not giving them enough water. Orchids do well in humid environments, but you have to make certain that you don't overdo it. Some types of orchids need extra water, and their soil should always be a little damp to the touch, such as the Miltonia, Cymbidium, Paphiopedilum, and the Odontoglossum varieties. You should check the soil for moisture daily in these orchids, and add water as needed, remembering to do so a little at a time, so as not to overdo it.

Other types of orchids do well and only have to have water about one time each week, and you don't really have to worry about keeping the soil moist, as they actually do better in drier conditions. If you have Vanda, Ascocenda, or Phalaenopsis orchids, you don't really have to worry about them as much, at least not when it comes to watering.

If you care for other plants, then you know that they require fertilizer to grow properly, and the same is true when it comes to caring for orchid plants. Your best solution when it comes to fertilizing your orchids is to purchase a brand that is designed specifically for orchids, and then make certain that you follow the package directions closely. If you give your orchids too much fertilizer, you could easily damage, or even kill them.

Just about all plants require light to grow, and orchids are no exception. To get those full, beautiful blooms, your orchid has to have adequate light. The amount of light that your orchid requires will vary, depending upon the exact type of orchid that you have. Cattleyas and Dendrobiums need more light than any other type, and thrive on it, so if you have these types of orchids, make certain that you have them in an area that gets lots of sunlight throughout the day. Phalaaenopsis and Paphiopedilums do not require as much light, and will do well in almost any area of your home.

There are ways to tell if your orchid isn't getting sufficient light. If you look at the leaves of your orchid, and notice that they are very, very dark green, they probably need more light. If they appear red, of have a reddish tint to them, then you probably are allowing them too much light, and should think of moving them to a better location. If you have a difficult time placing your orchids in a good spot, you can purchase a specially designed light, that can provide them with artificial sunlight, and in fact, many gardeners prefer this type of light, as they are in control of it, and can monitor exactly how much exposure their orchids get each day.

If you do a good job in caring for your orchids, they could live for many, many years. As your orchids grow, you will probably need to plan on repotting them about every other year or so. When you repot an orchid, it is important that you don't do it while the orchid is blooming, as you could possibly kill or damage your plant. It is important that you choose a pot that is large enough to hold the orchid and allow it room to grow, and that before you replant the orchid in a new pot, you carefully remove any dead leaves or roots from the orchid. Once you transplant the orchid into its new pot, you should leave it alone for about a week, and then carry on with your usual water and fertilizer routines.

You will find that caring for your orchids really isn't that difficult, once you learn how to do it properly. Once you have a routine down for providing adequate light, food, and water, your orchid could essentially live as long as you....imagine that!

A lot goes into caring for orchid plants. Diane recommends learning all you can for free at: http://www.orchids.gardenbot.com

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Diane_Crawford

Orchid Care – Difficult Choices

By Nigel Howell

Orchid growers come across many difficult choices when caring for their orchids. Perhaps one of the most difficult is deciding on how much to water the orchid. This is probably the most common mistake novices make.

It is very hard to judge the right time and the right amount of water to give to your orchid. Probably the biggest mistake people make is over watering the orchid. Very rarely do people under water, as with light people tend to over do it.

Different orchids require different amounts of water but what they all have in common is that they don’t like having their roots submerged in water as their roots will rot and die.

Even then, the orchid will require different amounts of water depending on the season. In the summer when it is hot your orchid will require more water than in the winter.

Tap water is ok for the orchid but rainwater is much better. Try leaving a couple of watering cans in the garden to catch the rain so that you will have a constant source of water for your plants.

You could feed your orchids with extra nutrients if you don’t feel that they aren’t getting enough naturally. There are many different types of plant feed available from the very weak to the very strong. I would recommend that you find specialist orchid feed which is usually available at most garden stores. If you can’t find one then ask a store assistant which they recommend of those that they do stock. If you are still struggling then you can use general fertilizer as long as it isn’t too strong.

Another difficult decision to be made by the orchid grower is when to re-pot. Again the frequency of the re-potting will vary depending on the orchid but they will all require potting for one or all of these possible scenarios.

• The compost may have begun to decompose and therefore lost its nutritional content

• The compost may have become waterlogged due to over watering

• The orchid may have out grown its current home.

When you re-pot you need to use compost which allows water to drain away easily. This will help prevent the roots sitting in water and rotting.

The size of the new pot is very important. On most occasions the size of the new pot will be the same as the old. You should only increase the size of the pot if your orchid was too large for its old pot. The roots of your orchid like to be snug.

These two areas of orchid care often provide challenges for even the most experienced of orchid growers, so you are in good company. I have only touched the surface of these two topics so please read more material for further information.

Nigel owns OrchidCareExpert.com, a website which contains lots of useful information for orchid care.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Nigel_Howell

A Guide To The Most Popular Orchid Species

By Percy Troughton

Orchids are beautiful plants that grow equally beautiful flowers. They are usually aerial plants which mean that their roots are primarily found in the air or attached to trunk of trees. There are many different orchid species and all of them have exotic blooms that may or may not have a fragrance. The colors that the orchid blooms have are spectacular and some flowers have startling color combinations that are very attractive and unique.

There are roughly more than 25,000 species of orchids worldwide. These numbers grow regularly due to the constant addition of hybrids and new discoveries. Most orchid species are almost always found in rain forests and tropical areas of the world. The orchids love moisture so they thrive in rain forests and tropical climates.

Well Known Orchid Species

Dendrobiums are among the more popular orchid species in the world. These species have a wide range of colors for their flowers. Some species have white flowers while others have purple or yellow. These orchid species can be found in most parts of Asia including but not limited to the Philippines, Borneo, New Zealand, Australia and New Guinea. The great demand for these orchid species has inspired hobbyists to create hybrids of the orchid.

The Cattleya is a beautiful orchid that can be found in some parts of South America up to Asia. These extravagant orchid species are very beautiful and usually bloom in small groups of a single flower to eight flowers per blooming season. The colors are from white to yellow to deep purple. The Cattleya is beautiful orchid that does not grow total but instead spreads out and is similar to the dendrobiums in some aspects.

The orchid species of Vanda are very strange looking plants that bear exotic looking flowers. Their leaves sprout from a single stalk and grow singly on each side. The flower stalks come from one of the leaves’ base and these can contain from five up to twenty blooms. This orchid species can be commonly found but not exclusive to the Philippines, India, China, Australia, the Himalayas, Indonesia and New Guinea.

The three orchid species mentioned above are just the tip of the proverbial iceberg when it comes to the different species of orchids. There are man different kinds of orchids available and even more exotic ones at that. Some orchid species have even been discovered recently have been around for several hundred years in the rainforests. The beauty of these plants has endeared them to many people who strive to grow them in places which are so different from their usual habitat.

Percy Troughton runs his own garden center as well as running several shopping based websites. The beauty of the plant itself is amazing, but the colors of the flowers are even more intense. There are plenty of different varieties of orchid varieties. Most of them are aerial plants, with their roots found in the air or on tree trunks.

New orchid varieties are being discovered and created all the time. To date, there are over 25,000 varieties of orchids. They thrive in humid climates, so they are naturally found in tropical rainforest's.

Well Known Orchid Species

One of the most common type of orchid is the dendrobium. The flowers of the dendrobium can be white, purple, or yellow. They are mostly found in Asia (including it's tropical islands) and Australia.

Another type of orchid is the Cattleya. It can be found in South America and Asia, and is extremely beautiful. It is actually quite similar to the dendrobiums, in that the flower colors are typically white, yellow, or purple. Instead of growing up though, the cattleya spreads out. They bloom between one and eight flowers in a blooming season.

One of the more strange looking versions of the orchid is the Vanda species. It's leaves grow on a single stalk, with leaves growing singly on each side. The stem of the flower comes from the base of the leaves, with five to twenty blooms coming from each stem. It is often found in the Philippines, India, China, Australia, the Himalayas, Indonesia, and New Guinea.

It would be impossible to explain all of the different varieties of orchid species here. The three above are just a small sample.
One thing that all of the species have in common is their beauty. Choosing a variety to grow at home can add a unique aspect to your decorating. Orchid care is not that difficult. It is also a fulfilling experience to nurture these plants, helping them survive so far from their natural homes.

Learning orchid care is what taught me how to grow plants. All in all orchid care leaves is becoming more important to all the orchid lovers. The leaves can also give very important information about the orchid plant.

Orchid care leaves can help you to diagnose what is wrong with your plant. I imagine this as one of the best ways to see the early signs of potentially fatal diseases.

Leaves can be yellow, blackened or brown or they may become shriveled. Let's learn more about orchid care and what to do.

Blackened leaves show their effects on the body or the tip of the leaf. If it is on the body of the plant it is usually due to the hot sun causing a leave to burn. Orchid care would tell us that if this may to the case put the plant away from direct sunlight.

If sun burn is not the cause and the size of the spots continue to grow then it may be a bacterial or fungal disease. orchid care leaves suggest to cut off the affected part of the leave and treat it will a fungicide like natriphene.

What about blackened or brown tips of the leave. This could be caused by excessive minerals in your water. This is fairly common in well water. With orchid care you should have your water tested.

It also could be caused by excessive fertilizing, especially cymbidiums or once again a fungal infection. If it seems to become larger you need to cut off the affected and treat the plant with a fungicide.

Leaves may also be mottled or streaked black or brown. They are telling us that this could be from a viral infection. Caring for orchids tells us to determine this special tests are needed and can be provided by your local agriculture experiment station. You will need to send in a leave. As in humans, there is really not much for treating this right now. Orchid care leaves also suggest that you isolate this plant right away.

Yellow leaves are probably the most common ailment we see. Good orchid care would tell us that it just could be a natural phenomenon called old age. If it seems to e happening to the oldest leaves don't worry.

On the other hand it could be from, too much light (most common), not enough nitrogen in the fertilizer or if the medium is primarily bark. Other causes include being subjected to low temps or loss of roots. Orchid care would suggest to first change the lighting and potential for low temps. Keep in mind that in the North being on a window sill during winter can be a cold spot.

Another condition that you could see in orchids are small spots that turn from reddish brown to black. These are most likely caused by fungal infection.

As orchid growers we need to remember that humidity is needed for proper orchid growth and the orchid supply. Too much humidity favors the growth of fungus.

The last orchid care leaves tip I want to mention is the shriveling of the pseudopods. Pseudopods are very efficient water storage areas of the plants. If there is not enough water given to the plants or the humidity is too low the leaves will shrivel. Also, if the root system is dying you can get shriveled pseudopods.

Leaves sure do tell us a great deal about orchids and help us to keep diseases at bay and not becoming fatal
Visit our Orchid Store: http://www.orchid-store.orchids-plus-more.com

** This article can be used freely as long as the author and the Orchids-Plus-More.com are identified within the article

This site http://www.orchids-plus-more.com is devoted to these wonderful orchid plants. Anyone who is serious about growing orchids knows that light is very important, light is critical if you want your orchids to have flowers, you will need to supply the right amount of light and be very careful not to burn the orchid, even though in some aspects the orchid may seem to be very sensitive and delicate, these are actually very strong flowers, and they will survive even without light or ideal conditions, the only thing is that they will only survive and not bloom.

These basic facts brings us to a common sense conclusion, if you are interested in having orchids in your garden you will need to think about the best location for that kind of orchid and with some effort you could provide the ideal conditions for the orchid to grow in your garden.

In order to make the most of the orchids you grow you should have some basic understanding of the three main kinds of orchids you can find, as you probably understand by now, understanding the orchid plant needs will assist you in making it bloom and survive in your environment.

These are three kinds of orchids and the basic treatment that they require. Epiphytes, this kind of orchid plant will enjoy being placed on elevated position, placing the Epiphytes orchid on a high shelf or stand will provide a situation very similar to its natural habitat where it grows on trees.

Lithophytes orchids are, unlike the Epiphytes, better placed on a low space, they are known as orchids that grow on the bases of trees and they enjoy feeding on organic nutrition such as rich organic soil and discomposed mildews. Terrestrials orchids. When speaking of the Terrestrials you should know that they are the conventional varieties of orchids. Place the Terrestrials on the ground and they will plant themselves strongly and take care of their needs.

There is much more information about orchids and many different techniques to grow them better and better, this is only the tip of the iceberg, this basic knowledge is important for anyone who is interested in having lovely orchids in his garden.

Discover the beauty of Orchid Flowers a http://www.ZupaTips.com site.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Daniel_Roshard

Orchid Selection

Selecting orchid plants takes more than just admiring an orchid's flowers, but with the right information it can be quick and easy. It is one where a great number of the orchid plants need care as well as the change in the basic requirements. Most orchids use this season as a "rest period" to get ready to produce blooms in the winter or spring.

From the summer season to the fall there is a less a requirement for water as the temperature decreases. You will need to monitor this closely. Don't forget it you see wrinkling on the leaves this means that you need more H2O.

As a general rule this time of the year requires the use of an orchid fertilizer richer in phosphorous is needed to boost the bloom potential. This means that there is higher percentage in nitrogen-phosphorous-potassium in the fertilizer mixture. As you use fertilizer on the orchid plants use it as half strength and generally once a week.

I like to fertilizer after I have watered the plant. Once again be sure that you allow the water and fertilizer to run out of the pot. Leaving water and fertilizer in the pot allows root rot to destroy the orchid - very quickly.

The temperature is also getting cooler in most parts of the country during the fall. So if you have plants outdoors you may start to think about getting them indoors. Most orchids can do well in with temps in the 50's and few do ok into the forties. I like to suggest that your plants come inside when the night temps are in the mid fifties.

Now let's get to some specifics for some of the different genera. For cattleyas there growth rate will tend to slow as the fall progresses. The sheaths on the catts will show some changes indicative of blooming over the next six months. Don't forget the fertilizer and watering. These plants do well in bright lighting.

Also, if you are bringing your orchid indoors from being outside check carefully for any pests that may be clinging to the plant.

Cymbidiums may start blooming in the fall and they need to be in shaded cool areas. Cyms have a genetically based warmth tolerance but for the best blooms they need an area that is shaded and somewhat cooler. The spikes with the flowers, called inflorescence, needs to be staked to prevent the heavy flowers from weighting down the spike.

Phalaenopsis are just starting to go through the next stage to ready for blooms in the late winter and spring. They need the cool difference in daytime and nighttime temps. It is recommended that there be about a 10 - 15 degree Fahrenheit difference.

Phalaenopsis also need to be watered and fertilized less often during this first few months of fall. They are resting. It would helpful to give them a fertilizer with a higher phosphorous percentage to help boost the blossom potential. This fertilizer is also called "blossom booster".

Dendrobiums also need a "blossom booster" as well at this time of the year. Remember their flowers are usually plentiful and grow toward the top of the spike making them top heavy. Use a stake to help hold them erect and be sure that the pot is heavy enough to keep itself upright.

The green leaved Paphs are also getting ready to have flowers. The shafts are displaying the spikes. Be careful with these orchids as a sudden heat spell will prove disasterous to the new blooms. Keep them in a cooler area and with good air circulation.

Paphs don't like to get dry so be careful with watering. If you were watering twice a week try cutting down to once. But while doing this test your medium with the dry tip of a pencil. Stick it down about an inch or two into the pot, if the tip comes out wet your fine.

This should help you to have great orchids both in the fall season and beyond.
Get the Guide to Growing Great Orchids, Mastering Orchids, a 70 page guide for half price ($9.95) Just subscribe to our monthly free orchid newsletter, Orchidaceae.
http://www.orchids-plus-more.com/orchid-newsletter.html

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Robert_Roy

Orchid TIme Lapse 1

Time lapse video of an orchid blooming.

Video Source : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3nBUfDpDNlA

4 Things Every Orchid Grower Should Know

By Lee Dobbins
If you are an aspiring orchid grower than you know how beautiful these plants are and how rewarding it is to grow them in your own home. Many people are hesitant to try to grow these exotic beauties as they feel that too much specialized equipment is required and the novice grower just really doesn't have a chance to be successful. This really couldn't be further from the truth and, in fact, it is not that hard to successfully grow orchids given that you provide them with the 4 necessities listed below.

1. Humidity

Being tropical plants, orchids to require a lot of humidity and any successful orchid grower will tell you that this is key to having good plants. Since orchids need at least 50% humidity you will have to set your growing space up to provide for that. One way to do this is to set down a tray filled with pebbles and filled out with water. Then using some sort of us stand, set your orchid pots in the tray on top of the stand so that the bottoms of the pots are not actually in the water. Misting can also give you orchid's humidity but you need to be careful that the leaves can thoroughly dry and therefore you would need good air circulation before may sting them.

2. Water

Like all growing plants, orchids need water, but a common mistake that many growers make is to think that because they require high humidity that they must be watered continuously, this is simply not true and overwatering is a sure way to kill an orchid. You should one of them when the soil becomes dry which is usually about once a week. Water until the soil is moist but take care not to overwater. If the soil in your orchid pot remains wet for more than a day than you over watered it. You can add some water soluble fertilizer formulated specially for orchids but only during the growing season.

3. Light

Of course orchids need plenty of light to grow properly especially during the summer. During the winter months they can get by on about four hours. Different types of orchids require different amounts of light so you'll need to know the specifics for your plant. if you cannot provide enough natural sunlight and grow lights will work just fine.

4. Soil

just like any other plant, orchids need nutrients and good soil to growing. Luckily you can buy potting soil formulated specifically for orchids. You may be able to find this at your local garden store or you can even buy it from the orchid grower themselves. The plant may have been healthy and fit when it left the grower, but if conditions have not been right since then, the buds may be yellow and shriveled. These will drop off and the plant should be avoided.

FOLIAGE
This should be clean, a deep green colour and not floppy and dehydrated.

LEAVES
Check the undersides for any bugs that may be hiding there.

FLOWERSPIKES
Make sure that they are staked correctly and that some buds are unopened.

COMPOST
Examine the surface to make sure that there are no dead roots showing, which indicates that the root system is not healthy.

Always ask the sales staff to provide some growing information for you. Even a short leaflet will help you with its care. Having an expert, experienced grower giving you extra tips and information on fertilizing, light requirement and watering can make a huge difference.

Mail order suppliers on the World Wide Web and orchid societies give you the benefit of compiled advice of several experienced growers.

HOW DOES YOUR ORCHID REACH THE STORE?

In the past, a nursery man would raise his own plants, growing them through all stages of development and retailing them directly to customers. Today, things are very different.

Mericloning- the method of mass propagation has led to an unparalleled number of orchids reaching the store.

Only the very best varieties are chosen when the main stem tip or nucleus of growing cells is removed from the plant and cultured in laboratories. Millions of orchid plants are produced in huge laboratories each year.

When young, these plants are sold to a grower who will take them to near flowering size. From here, they will be passed on to yet another nursery man who will bring them to bloom. Finally, they will be sold to a retail outlet. From start to finish, the orchid plant may have traveled half way around the world before reaching a store near you.

With the increased popularity of orchids as house plants, many people buy them, enjoy the flowers and then throw the plant away. This is a waste, because with correct care and attention, an orchid can continue to flower and reflower in its season for several years. So take care to choose a plant and then plan to enjoy it in the years ahead.
Buy Orchid Flowers after reading more guides and informative articles about orchid flowers and plants. The range of choice is wide, since there are from fifteen to twenty thousand species.

The orchid family varies widely in habitat, ranging throughout the tropics, over the temperate zones of both hemispheres, and even reaching into the fringes of the Arctic. There is a similarly wide variation in type, with several systems of classification.

The first division is into monopodial and sympodial groups, referring to the habit of growth. The monopodial, including the Vanda and Aerides, grow continuously from a central crown, which eventually appears atop a long stem that has frequently lost its lower leaves. Phalaenopsis, although monopodial, is stemless, but yearly grows a pair of leaves from the characteristic crown.

The leaves of monopodial orchids are heavy, leathery, fleshy, and capable of storing some quantity of moisture, but the plants must never be allowed to dry out completely. The leaves of Vanda teres, like pine needles, do not resemble leaves, but are three to four inches long, very slender, round and succulent, and taper to a point.

The sympodial group, of which Cattleya, Laelia, and Coelogyne are notable examples, has a creeping rootstock, with each new growth springing from the base and alongside the last year's growth. The new growth appears as a swelling or "dormant" eye that at the proper time will "break" or begin to grow. In some genera, such as Laelia and Coelogyne, the growths will break in several directions, but in Cattleya usually in only one.

The pseudobulb, a characteristic of sympodial orchids, is a reservoir for food and moisture against times of drought and dormancy. It differs widely according to the different genera. The pseudobulb of Cattleya is longish, smooth, and rounded; while that of Laelia may be slightly flattened, even in some cases assuming a many-sided angular form. Certain species have pseudobulbs that resemble small pineapples. The pseudobulbs of Odonto-glossum and Miltonia are much flattened and compressed; those of Coelogyne are very round, short, and prolific; and those of Cymbidium very large, rounded, and stocky. Dendrobium in many species lacks pseudobulbs, but even the long cane-like flower stems, along which the leaves grow in pairs, are capable of storing food and moisture.

Orchids may also be classified as saprophytic, terrestrial, semi-terrestrial, and epiphytic. Here we will not be much concerned with the saprophytes, natives of temperate zones, since they either lack flowers entirely or have small inconspicuous flowers of interest only to the botanist.

The terrestrial orchids are also found in the temperate zones of both hemispheres. Among them are the tall Sobralia, graceful Cypripediums, Spiranthes, and fairy-flowered Habenaria. Calypso bulbosa (or borealis) is a native of the cold reaches of the Arctic.

North America abounds in native orchids, many of which are very common and not generally recognized as orchids. Most showy of these, the Cypripedium or well-known "lady's slipper", has a wide range of habitat in the United States and has attractive foliage as well as flowers. However, few of the terrestrial orchids transplant well from their marshy homes, and it is perhaps best to seek them out and enjoy them in their native habitat.

By far the largest, most varied, and most showy of the orchid family are included in the semi-terrestrial and epiphytic groups. These are tropical or subtropical and live on trees in the rainswept coastal jungles or on bare rocks in the hot sun. Their elevation ranges from sea level to two thousand feet above sea level. They abound through parts of Asia, the islands of the South Pacific, Australia, New Zealand, Africa, and South and Central America. The Himalayas and the Andes are also congenial to lovely orchids.

This is but a fraction of the extent of the orchid family: the orchidist will probably never come to the end of his subject. He should rejoice in the wealth available.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/gardening-articles/secrets-of-the-orchid-family-244025.html

Orchid Video : Winter Bloom

Time lapse photography of an orchid blooming, taken over a period of 6-days. Orchids have over 17000 species and come in variety of pure colors and combinations. White is the color associated with purity, virtue, and innocence. Hence, white adds a hint of elegance and glam to the orchid flower.

Orchids collectively form a family called Orchidaceae, which account for nearly thirty thousand members of the plant kingdom. These flowers grow mainly in the tropics although species are found everywhere except in arid dessert regions. They have been largely domesticated for their monetary value and the orchid trade is today one of the largest profitable botanical vocations in the world. Most of the orchids that are sent across the planet originate in South America, Central America, and Tropical Asia. Many of the species that are part of this trade are being hybridized to reap in more profits. Although this may be beneficial to national economies, the plant kingdom is suffering as a consequence. Many orchid species are so hybridized that none of the original characteristics are sustained. These hybrid species, though far more sturdy have much shorter life spans and are hard to reproduce. Moreover, these hybrid species, when accidentally released into the wild, slowly wipe out indigenous species through competition.

The greatest sufferer in this race for survival is the white orchid. White is generally a recessive color in the plant kingdom and when white orchids are crossbred with colored ones, there is only a 3:1 chance that the offspring will be white. In fact, most white orchid plants end up with bicolor off springs in their second or third bloom. Naturally, white orchids are generally more abundant on the African continent, although the only pure strain white orchid comes from Thailand. Orchids belonging to the genii Aerangiis, Angraecum, Cyrtorchis, Neobenthamia, and Rangeris are exquisitely white.

Orchids provides detailed information on Orchids, Orchids for Sale, Care of Orchids, Growing Orchids and more. Basically, it derives its expression from the term Greek Orchis testicle through its emergence from the pseudobulbs in certain worldly genus. By far, around 30,000 genus of this plant have been discovered, and around 60,000 additional types are on the verge of discovery through various horticulturalists. Normally, they are referred as monocotlydons, with blossoms compiled of a total of 6 petals, in which one is customized into a "lip". Majorities of Orchid derive the moisture and nutrients directly from the sunlight and grow on other plants without parasitic residuals on those plants.

The attractiveness, the dimensions and classiness of this particular species has fascinated humans through centuries. Certain kinds of this diversified species also feed on earth quite frequently under specified sheltered atmosphere. Approximately, every kind of this species closely depends on mycorhizal connections, along with a variety of crumbled fungi adjoined to it releasing water-soluble nutrient contents. The seeds of Orchid are exceptionally very minute, without any food storages and are not tend to nurture, until all these connections provide it the necessary nutrients under a suitable natural environment.

Varieties:

Now-a-days, several methods have been formulated by mankind to successively sprout the seeds in a coagulated nutrient liquid, for eradicating the need of essential fungi. This technique significantly assists the breeding of this exceptional and scarce genus. The credit for the glowing feature of Orchid goes to their regenerative routines. One of finest variety of this species is the Paphiopedilums, possessing a profound sack that firmly attracts the spectator's attention with only one outlet that escorts it for pollination.

A Large numbers of male bees are appealingly attracted towards a Eurasian kind of this species, because of its flowers that somewhat resembles the female bumble bees. A typical form of this species in Australia never gives a glimpse to the sunlight. However, it fools the ants to protect itself from pollinating by the ants. Another kind of Orchid known as the Masdevalia that smells similar to a decayed Carcas, and the woodland flies are drawn towards it greatly helps in its reproduction process. One of the amazing kinds of this species is the Darwin, which opens its pollen bags with provocative strength, when it is pressed.

Availability:

In Malaysia, a unique kind of this species can be found known as Phalaenopsis that utilizes fine climatic conditions for harmonizing bunches of flowers. The Orchid comes in large varieties of both subtropical as well as tropical forms and these also are the most usual available form of this species. Hence, they are frequently available in various societies of orchids and garden center across the entire globe. Certain varieties of this species are capable to blossom in severe freezing climatic atmosphere, though there availability in the market is quite rare.
If you would like to learn more about Growing Orchid and receive a FREE Newsletter on the subject visit the authors site http://www.growingorchidhelp.com.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Jason_Hobbs

Orchid Video : American Orchid Society

Some of the beautiful flowers seen during my tour of the American Orchid Sociey. Yes, many of us might hold roses as the most emotion-inducing flowers. After all, roses are the flower most associated with romance in our culture. But in truth, most would consider an orchid to be a much more romantic gift. Who would not choose an exotic and wild orchid (and often rather expensive orchid) over a typical backyard rose?

There is much more of a culture behind orchids. There are so many people that are extremely passionate about orchids – whether these people collect and grow phalaenopsis orchids, cymbidium orchids, and dendrobium orchids in their homes, whether they travel around the world taking photos of wild orchids, or whether they spend years of their lives trying to find the perfect hybrid to make a truly black orchid… some people are just crazy about orchids and pursuing them is their life goal!

Of course, you do not have to be absolutely crazy about orchid plants just to love them. Perhaps you have just one orchid flower that you love and care for dearly. Or, perhaps you love and care for that orchid flower a little too dearly, and you end up over-fertilizing it or over-watering it. And, of course, such actions will surely lead to the demise of your beloved orchid plant!

Orchid care can be rather tricky, and sometimes, it seems, only seasoned orchid growers can master proper orchid care. In truth, though, there are quite a few species of orchids that practically anyone could grow – it is just a matter of providing the right growing conditions and the right orchid care.

Even if you are not growing an orchid plant of your own, you can surely appreciate the beauty of any orchids that you might see in photographs or in another person’s home. There is just something hypnotic and tantalizing about orchids.

Again, there are likely some of us who prefer roses to orchids, but perhaps this is simply because roses are more common – roses are everywhere – and people have not yet had enough exposure to the beauty of orchid flowers.

Indeed, although there is much more of an orchid-culture than a rose-culture, it seems that references to roses appear in our overall culture much more often. Just take a look at poetry! Take a look at tattoos, even!

Nonetheless, the love of orchids is a love that will burn brightly in a culture for as long as orchids still exist. There are so many different orchids out there in the world, it is practically impossible to not fall in love with at least one species, or type. Orchidaceae is a remarkably diverse family that contains over 25,000 recognized species divided into more than 800 different genera. Five subfamilies are used - Apostasioideae, Cypripedioideae, Epidendroideae, Orchidoideae and Vanilloideae. The classification of orchids varies among botanists, and there might actually be up to 30,000 described species of orchids. One of the most recognized authorities on the subject, the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, includes around 24,000 species in their official list of known orchids. To this we can add more than 100,000 hybrids and cultivars that have been produced by man. Future research utilizing genetic testing is believed to lead to significant revisions within the family Orchidaceae.

The name orchid is derived from the Greek name for testicle – orchis. The subterranean tuberoids found on orchids from the genus Orchis look a bit similar to a human testicle. The first known use of the word is from the book De historia plantarum (The natural history of plants) which was written by Theophrastos. Theophrastos lived from approximately 372 to 287 B.C. and was educated by Aristotle. Theophrastos is considered to be the father of botany as well as of ecology.

Wild Orchids can be found all over the world in a wide range of different habitats, with the exception of desert environments and the harsh Antarctic continent. You can find orchid species on the Macquarie Island near Antarctica, and on the opposite side of the planet orchids are growing above the Arctic Circle. You will however encounter the greatest selection of orchids in tropical regions in Asia and South and Central America.

Around 300-350 of the recognized orchid genera are native tropical America. Tropical Asia is home to at least 250-300 genera, and tropical Africa has approximately 125-150 orchid genera. Oceania has 50-70 recognized orchid genera, Eurasia 40-60 genera and North America 20-30 known genera.

Orchids are often divided into four broad groups depending on how they retrieve their nutrients.

1.) Epiphytes anchor themselves on other plants, but they are not parasites. The orchids found in this group use photosynthesis to utilize energy from the sun. They are sometimes called “air plants” since they will not root in soil. A majority of the orchid species are epiphytes.

2.) Lithophytes are similar to epiphytes, but instead of anchoring themselves to other plants the lithophytes grow on rocks and rocky soil. They derive nutrients from rain water, litter, humus and similar sources and can break down and re-use their own dead tissue.

3.) Terrestrial orchids will root in soil or in pockets of loose substrate located above ground. They will retrieve nutrients from the soil/substrate in which they grow and this type of orchid is very common in temperate regions.

4.) Myco-heterotrophs have no chlorophyll of their own and will instead form ectomycorrhizal relationships with soil fungi that feed on decaying plant matter, e.g. fallen leaves. Earlier, the orchids in this group used to be known as saprophytes.

Most orchid species are listed under Appendix II in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), but some have been placed in Appendix I. Appendix I contains species that are considered threatened with extinction of trade is not haltered. Appendix II lists species that are not necessarily threatened with extinction right now, but which may become so if they remain completely unlisted. Examples of orchid species listed in Appendix I are the orchids in the genera Paphiopedilum and Phragmipedium. When an orchid is listed in Appendix I, it is illegal to trade wild-caught specimens of that species unless you obtain a special license. These licences are only issued in exceptional cases. Cultivated specimens are legal to trade, but a non-detriment finding and an export permit is necessary if you want to export the orchids.
The author of this article writes for a number of flower sites including sunflower guide and the meaning of roses.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=William_Berg

All About Orchids

By Nigel Howell
The orchid flower comes from a very diverse and the largest flowering family on the planet. It is also one of the oldest, 100 million years or so orchids have been growing on earth. This reason plus they are very versatile has enabled many species to multiple and multiple. It is believed that there are more the 35,000 species of orchid. There are also many more hybrid varieties of this wonderful flower family.

Although orchids have been around for a while they are still very popular. In fact, in recent years the have become more and more popular. They were first cultivated a few centuries ago although there beauty has been appreciated much longer than that. The Chinese and Japanese cultures were writing about orchids a few thousand years ago. Up the 20th century orchid cultivation remained in the spheres of the wealthy. In England, the aristocracy were keen orchid growers ever since the first global traders brought them back from the far corners of the world.

Everybody knows that vanilla comes from a plant. You may be surprised to know that it is actually an orchid where vanilla is derived, the planifolia to give it its correct name. Vanilla is solely grown for its commercial value as opposed to most other orchids which are very beautiful plants and grown for their beauty. Many farmers around the world grow the orchid crop just for the vanilla seeds.

There are many orchid fanatics around due to the beauty of the orchid flower. It is not only humans that appreciate orchids, insects are attracted to orchids which in turn assists in reproduction.

There are flying insects such as bees which attracted into the pollinia of one particular orchid. The Bee Orchid looks very much like a female bee. The male be believes it is approaching a female when it is in fact assisting in the pollination process.

Here are some other examples of how orchids have evolved to reproduce:

Orchids with long stems that dance in the wind which look like butterflies.

Practical orchids which have landing platforms for insects to rest.

Orchids with slippery surfaces which insects slip on and fall into the flower ensuring nectar is brushed into the pollina.

The Angreacum Sesquipidales emits a scent to attract moths. In fact, Darwin wrote about this particular orchid. He predicted that a moth would be the insect to pollinate this orchid because the white flowered orchid emitted its scent at night.

Nigel owns OrchidCareExpert, a website which contains lots of useful information if you wish to know more about orchid care orchid care.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Nigel_Howell

Background And History Of Orchids (Orchidaceae Family)

By Nigel Howell

The orchid family is not only the largest but one of the most diverse plant flowering families in the world. The orchid was one of the first plants to evolve on earth, it was around in the time of the dinosaur, over 120 million years ago. Given the length of time they have been around it shouldn’t be surprising that there are over 35,000 species with hundreds of thousands of hybrids.

The most famous orchid in the world is the vanilla orchid (planifolia). Coca Cola is the largest customer of vanilla, they use the seed for flavouring. Madagascar is the world’s largest producer. Orchids are very beautiful plants and that is why so much time and care is put into growing them. Vanilla on the other hand is grown for its commercial value rather than for its appearance but it is labour intensive. The vanilla crop is the main source of income for many independent farmers in less developed countries.

Reproduction

One of the ways in which the orchid is so diverse is its ability to reproduce. Some orchids rely on flying insects, others rely on crawling insects and finally there are orchids that rely on the wind for pollination.

The Bee Orchid attracts bees to its flower by its appearance. It looks like a receptive bee which entices the male bee towards its pollinia. Other orchids have long stems which look as they are butterflies when dancing in the wind.

Some orchids have evolved so that they act as a good platform which attracts a weary insect to land. The nectar brought by the visiting insect brushes with the pollinia. Orchids sometimes have very slippery flowers which often results in the visiting insect falling right into the interior of the flower leaving only one exit point. This escape route forces the welcome intruder into brushing nectar against the pollina.

Darwin

Charles Darwin wrote about orchids when demonstrating his theory of evolution by natural selection. He made a prediction about the pollination method of one particular orchid, the Angreacum Sesquipidales. He predicted that given this particular species emitted a strong scent at night and was white, the insect that pollinated it would be a moth. Darwin was proved right and it is in fact a moth that pollinates the Angreacum Sesquipidales.

Popularity of Orchids

Orchids have become immensely popular recently but they have been written about and cultivated for a very long time. Orchids were first written about in 700 B.C. by the Chinese and Japanese. They weren’t, however, first cultivated until around 300 years ago when seeds were bought by traders from around the globe. It was only the wealthy that could cultivate them initially but luckily this pleasure is available to many more people these days. Even with our 300 year cultivating experience, many a gardener has been frustrated by the care needed to grow beautiful orchids but this only adds to their popularity.
Nigel owns OrchidCareExpert, a website which contains lots of useful information if you wish to know more about orchid care.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Nigel_Howell

Orchid Flowers - An Introduction

By: Jeffery Rush

Many people think the orchid plant cannot be grown indoors. When grown in the wild, the orchid plant often forms a symbiotic relationship with other plants in order to get the nutrients that it needs. The orchid plant, like most other plants, must live in the proper conditions in order for it to bloom. The three major conditions that must be controlled in order for the orchid plant to bloom are water, light, and temperature. The orchid plant receives moisture through its roots like all other plants. Avoid planting the orchid in potting soil, because it does not like to be in standing water. The orchid thrives in bright, indirect sunlight. The orchid will continue to grow without this change, but it will not bloom.

Orchids can be a difficult flower to grow indoors because they are usually found growing in nature. As long as you are familiar with the living conditions that orchids need to grow, then you can grow orchids indoors. Orchids should be grown in a similar way. If wholesale orchids are left in standing water, they will eventually die. Wholesale orchids also need to have the temperature variations of the plants that are grown in the wild. The leaf color of wholesale orchids will indicate whether or not the orchid is getting the right amount of light. Yellowish color leaves mean the plant is getting too much light.

The orchid is a perennial plant that usually has three petals. There are about 30,000 different species of orchids wildly growing worldwide. There three basic types of orchid: epiphytic, terrestrial, and saprophytic. The first of the types of different orchids, the epiphytic orchid, grows mostly in tropic and subtopic regions. The epiphytic types of orchid are the most popular for growing indoors. The terrestrial orchid is the second of the major types of orchid. Many people who try to grow terrestrial orchids attempt to grow them in potting soil. The third of the types of orchid is saprophytic. The saprophytic orchid has underground roots just as the terrestrial orchid does. Some species of saprophytic orchids grow completely underground and never come above. If a person can understand how to grow other plants inside the home, then they can understand how to grow orchids.

Article Source:
http://www.articlesbase.com/advice-articles/orchid-flowers-an-introduction-32404.html

Orchids Flower

By Daniel Roshard
There are over 25,000 types of orchids and, in fact the Orchidaceae family is the most numerous in the plant world! These beautiful plants have been around for over 100 million years and plants can range from microscopic to reaching several feet in height. The flowers have a distinctive look with 3 inner petals surrounded by 3 outer petals and a cupped petal that is distinct from the others. Some orchids even resemble other creatures like bees, moths and lizards!

Although we think of orchids as a tropical flower they can actually grow in almost any climate. They can grow on the ground or on trees and even rocks. Orchids are classified depending on their water requirements.
